Dress for Success

I am so excited to finally share this blog post: it has been a long time in the making. My driving force behind this blog has always been to create content that my readers actually want to read and will enjoy, so when I had some requests for teacher and workwear style I was more than excited to deliver.

Every time I think about workwear I am reminded of my senior year in college when I was required to attend ULM’s Career Fair. That particular semester we were graded on our choice in attire. I wore a wrap front dress with long sleeves and a pair of black pumps- very conservative and professional!  She looked me up and down, then told me I was getting points off because the only “truly appropriate” work wear was a suit.

I’m sorry, what?

Not only did I not even own a suit; I most certainly was not going out to buy one just for this assignment. But even more than any of that, I knew she was just flat out wrong. There are plenty of ways to look professional while still showing off your personal style and wearing things that actually make you feel good about yourself!

For me, workwear is always going to be a matter of balancing professional and trendy.  I feel like it’s so easy to get in a rut with “teacher style”  and end up wearing the same things all the time. It’s also really important to me to make sure my outfits for work are totally different than my weekend and free time clothes; I never want to feel like I’m wearing my work clothes on the weekend! So, I’m always looking for those perfect pieces that I can wear, and be comfortable in, in both situations.

Okay, so let’s break it down:

The most important part of this outfit are my pants. I bought them from The Loft and they are seriously my favorite work pants…ever.  The best part about The Loft is that their pants come in a bunch of different fits and lengths. These are the Skinny Ankle Pants in the Julie fit (shop them here!) I love them because they have an on-trend skinny fit, but in a dressier fabric. I was recently shopping at The Loft and was so excited when I found  these pants in a light grey color. But when I got them to the dressing room they were made from a stretchy fabric and had a completely different fit.  I loved the fact they the light grey pant was in a stretchy material (so comfy!)  And it had the cutest zipper detail (linked here and on super sale!) Unfortunately, they just weren’t a work friendly fit for me and I regrettably had to put them back up on their shelf. I’ll just wait for the day that my old faithful Julie Skinny comes in a new color.  Now, I know what you may be thinking:the price tag on these is a little steep; I promise you they are worth every penny! I’ve had these for over a year and wear them at least once a week. They are machine washable (praises) and look just as good as the day I bought them! They may be an investment piece, but their quality, fit, and versatility makes them an investment that you will not have buyer’s remorse over.

On the flip side of the pricey pants comes my top that I got on clearance ($12!!!) at Express! I love the cold shoulder cut that drapes into a flutter sleeve because it’s trendy and fun while having good shoulder coverage (which is a must for me when it comes to workwear). The fabric is not as transparent as your typical white top and the hidden buttons in front dress it up just a bit. This top can be taken from work to date night so easily! Slip on your favorite jeans and touch up your makeup- you’re ready to go!  I’m all about statement sleeves and ruffles right now, so this was a win-win for me! If you’re interested in shopping some cold shoulder, ruffles, or statement sleeves then you’re in luck! You can shop a few of my favorite picks from Express here, here, or here.

Last but certainly not least: (a woman’s best friend) the accessories. I’m all about adding a pop of color to my neutral outfits and the silk scarf (thanks Mom!) tied to my purse was the perfect touch. The scarf could also be worn around the neck- that’s just not a practical choice for me at work. My shoes are Steve Madden (check them out in the burgundyall the heart eyes!)  and are really much more comfortable than they look! I’m wearing the blush nubuck, but they’re really a good nude color. These shoes have turned into a year-round essential in my closet because of how versatile they are. They transition seamlessly between all different kinds of looks; perfect for work or to dress up a pair of jeans for date night.

I can never have enough workwear pieces and am constantly on the lookout for new items; so if you have any favorites PLEASE share! I would seriously love to hear from all of you on your personal style and how you approach dressing for work. So, here’s to the rest of the work week and making it the most stylish week yet!
